Welcome to the FST Blog!

Artwork by Barry Roal CarlsenWe're kicking off our FST Blog with a behind the scenes sneak peek into all of the work that has gone into SOUTH PACIFIC including upcoming posts from the director and several designers.

SOUTH PACIFIC is Four Seasons Theatre's fifth staged concert version - a format based on the popular New York City Opera series.  In a staged concert version the orchestra and cast are onstage together - offering audience the unique oppotunity to actually see the musicians playing the musical theatre score rather than only hearing their work coming from an orchestra pit. For SOUTH PACIFIC we are excited to work with Music Director Scott Foss and Conductor Steve Morgan.

In our staged concerts, singers and actors have memorized the script and music, are in costume and full hair/makeup, and have worked with a director who blocks the action on the stage in front of the orchestra.  In addition to a director/choreographer (Brian Cowing), costume designer (Monica Butler), and hair/makeup designer (Jan Ross), we also hired other theatre professionals to create a beautiful lighting design (Casey Martin), to manage the 20+ wireless mics used in the sound design (Steve Gotcher), and to find the many props and furniture items needed to create locales (Larry Keen).

The staged concert version is a great opportunity to produce a show that we may not have been able to for a mulitude of reasons including an overly expensive set, rights restrictions on full productions, or an unwieldy libretto. In this case, the stars converged - with road construction surrounding the Wisconsin Union Theater there was no way we could count on being able to drive a full size set to the theater.  As we searched for a possible solution we found out that Tony nominee Tom Wopat would be available for one week in August and it just happened to be the week were had reserved at the theater.  With that we found a wonderful solution - celebrate the 60th anniversary of one of the greatest musicals ever written and showcase one of Broadway's brightest stars in Rodgers & Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC.

We hope you'll join us at SOUTH PACIFIC, August 20-22 at the Wisconsin Union Theater.  Most tickets are only $22 or $27 with a few premium seats at $35 and cheap seats at $15. Purchase tickets online at any time or call the Campus Arts Box Office at (608) 265-ARTS.  Learn more.
