Joe Venuti

Eddie Lang

Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang were both pioneers of their instruments. Often referred to as the “Father of Jazz Guitar” and the “Father of Jazz Violin,” Lang and Venuti were childhood friends and collaborators. Throughout their careers, they worked with countless jazz icons and entertainers, from Bing Crosby to Earl Hines, and developed a sound that would influence generations of musicians to come.

In this episode, you’ll hear audio of Joe Venuti playing his violin using a technique in which he would loosen his bow hairs and play with the bow upside down around his violin, allowing him to play all four strings and make chords. That audio is found in this video, around the 5:35 mark. It’s certainly worth the watch.

We’ve created a companion playlist which includes the songs featured in today’s episode as well as some extra treats. Check it out on SpotifyA transcript of this episode can be accessed here.
